Using Fire Extinguishers Safely
Fire fighting is the last thing you should consider, after having completed all of the
other tasks required in your local fire evacuation procedure.
When using an extinguisher you should:
Not put yourself at risk- if you cannot get within 2 metres of the fire don't attempt
to extinguish it
Leave any fire which is still burning after applying the whole contents of one
extinguisher
Not to operate extinguisher on your own
Try to identify what is on fire( see combustibles on the previous slides)
Select the correct type of extinguisher to deal with this type of fire
Ensure you keep a clear exit route in case the fire develops quickly
Always position yourself between the fire and your way out
Do not hold the horn / nozzle of the extinguisher - it freezes
Use the PASS method to operate- see next slide.
