When a fire breaks out in a building the most important thing is for people
inside to escape safely and quickly. Regardless of the location of the fire,
once people are aware of it they should be able to proceed safely along an
escape route to a place of safety. In order to achieve this, it may be
necessary to protect the escape route by the provision of fire-resisting
construction.
Escape routes enable people to escape from fire to a place of safety, usually
without the help of others. Lifts must not be used except those specifically designed
for use by people with disabilities.
