Clinical staff who carry out urinary catheterisation must be
sure the patient really needs the catheter
Document reason for catheterisation and the residual urine
(use sticker provided) in the patient healthcare records and
review the need for continual catheterisation daily
Secure catheter using a catheter stabilisation device
Remove the catheter according to policy as soon as clinically
possible
Patient going home should be given catheter care information
leaflet and referred to district nurses for ongoing catheter care
