When do we need to do it?
Whilst patient is in your care any invasive devices becomes their
responsibility and the device should be observed at least every shift (12
hours) but also every time it is used.

Every nurse should check all their patients devices and the dressings and
record it on the patient healthcare record (not on the insertion and removal
device form).

Every time before the line is used it must be checked to ensure it is
patent, it looks clean and safe to use. Nurses' can and should make the
decision to remove a peripheral line whilst only a doctor can make the
decision to remove a central line.

The nurse is responsible for assessing the condition of the PVC using the
VIP score. The VIP score is discussed in more detail on a following slide.
The nurse must ensure that any CVCs are reviewed by a doctor with the
view to remove on a daily basis.
