The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the UK's independent authority set up
to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public
bodies and data privacy for individuals. The Information Commissioner governs the
provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The ICO has the power to serve monetary penalties of up to £500,000 on organisation
that breach data protection law.
To date the ICO served monetary penalties to the tune of £1.9m to NHS organisations,
the highest being £325,000 for insecure disposal of personal data.
