Methotrexate is a disease modifying drug indicated in the treatment of a number of
conditions including severe rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's and psoriasis. It is a
cytotoxic drug and it works by suppressing the immune system. When patients are
prescribed it, it is important to
Know why the patient is on it.
Ensure that the drug is prescribed ONCE A WEEK
The days the patient is not taking the drug should be crossed off in the drug chart
Use gloves when handling.
Store in the original container in the patients bedside locker.
Discuss with the medical staff if there is a:
Increase in temperature
Raised blood pressure
White Cell Count less than 4
Remember if the patient has a Methotrexate monitoring booklet with them
that this is updated.
