There are a number of pieces of legislation that relate to the prescribing, supply,
storage and administration of controlled drugs (CD's). It is essential that you
comply with them and to the trust policy at all times.
All stationary, order books and registers that can be used to
order controlled drugs must always be stored securely and
access to them should be restricted.
An up to date signature list of those staff authorised to order
CD's in that area must be kept.
The CD process begins at the cupboard and ends at the patient
bedside.
The same two health care professionals who prepare the drug at
the cupboard should be the same two who witness
administration and sign the CD register.
