Potassium
Potassium chloride concentrate is an identified risk to patients during
intravenous administration, and can be fatal if given inappropriately. For
this reason: 
 
  • The number of clinical areas authorised to hold this is limited.
  • It should be stored in a separate locked cupboard.
  • Clinical areas who have a temporary use for it can store it in the CD
  • cupboard.
  • Documentation should follow the format of the CD requirements and
  • potassium registers must be used.
  • Commercially prepared ready to use solutions should be used
  • wherever possible.
  • Two health care professionals should always follow the seven rules for
  • checking and administration.
