To ensure the safety of patients, in the Trust, who have nasogastric feeding tubes inserted and to
improve the post insertion care given by health care professionals.
 
Objectives
 
By the end of the training the learner will be able to identify:
 
  • The patients who are suitable/unsuitable for bedside nasogastric tube placement
  •  
  • The complications that can arise from misplaced nasogastric tubes and recognise those patients
  • who are at high risk of tube misplacement
  •  
  • The passage of the nasogastric feeding tube through the nasopharyngeal and gastrointestinal tracts
  •  
  • What procedures are used/banned to confirm position of nasogastric feeding tubes, and the
  • limitations of the used procedures
  •  
  • When the position of the nasogastric tube should be checked
  •  
  • How to analyse check X-rays accurately to detect correct tube placement 
  •  
  • What a never event is and the relevance to nasogastric tube insertion
