The programme came into effect  with the aim to equip HCSW’s with a wider knowledge and improve their leadership skills. The higher development programme aims to build on the expansion of the existing Health Care Support Workers who have already completed the Care Certificate, and to increase their awareness and improve patient experience for effective patient outcomes. It is a personal development programme for existing HCSW’s not only to increase their knowledge but also to give the opportunity to undertake Enhanced Care (providing 1:1 or 1:4) care to patients who required closer monitoring and patients who are at risk of harm to self or others.

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors. It's made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are 'new to care' and should form part of a robust induction programme. The Care Certificate was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.
